Welcome to the Outer Hebrides or the Western Isles

outer hebrides

On the far north west corner of Scotland, lie a group of Islands known as The Outer Hebrides, or The Western Isles, and in Gaelic as Na h-Eileann An Iar.
Situated on the very edge of Europe and, apart from St Kilda, and Rockall , there is nothing but 4000 miles of the Atlantic ocean, between the Outer Hebrides and the east coast of North America.
The Islands which are inhabited by 30,000 people, are made up of three connected groups, starting from the north with.....
Lewis and Harris, Bernera and Scalpay.....
North Uist, Bernary, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay.....
Barra Vatersay and Barra Head Lighthouse to the south.....
From the Butt of Lewis to Barra Head, the islands stretch for 250km
South Uist is joined to the neighboring islands of Benbecula and Eriskay by causeways.
